2011 Chevrolet Volt Offers Impressive Battery Warranty

The 2011 Chevrolet Volt (electric vehicle) will come with an impressive battery warranty:
  • Volt’s long-life battery warranty most comprehensive of any electric vehicle
  • All 161 battery components validated to withstand extreme temperatures, terrain and driving patterns
  • GM’s Brownstown Township, Mich., battery plant will begin regular production in August
The Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle with extended range will provide customers with an unprecedented, standard, eight-year/100,000-mile warranty on its advanced, lithium-ion battery. It is the automotive industry’s longest, most comprehensive battery warranty for an electric vehicle, and is transferable at no cost to other vehicle owners.

“The Chevrolet Volt’s batteries have exceeded our performance targets and are ready to hit the road,” said Micky Bly, GM executive director, global electrical systems. “Our customers are making a commitment to technology that will help reduce our dependence on petroleum. In turn, we are making a commitment to our customers to deliver the highest standards for value, safety, quality, performance and reliability for an unprecedented eight years/100,000 miles.”

MotorTrend Drives the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado HD

MotorTrend recently had the chance to drive the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado HD:

So how does the lineup drive? GM recently gave us the chance to drive just about every variation it offers, through the rolling (and sometimes steep) hills of eastern Maryland, parts of Pennsylvania, and the deep-wooded areas of West Virginia. For simplicity's sake, I'll focus most of my comments on the Silverado 2500 HD Extended Cab LT 4x4. This configuration will likely be the volume leader for GM. From the beginning of our route it was almost startling how smooth the front and rear suspensions drove over the hilly highways, especially since our test truck was completely empty of payload.

Traditionally, empty is never how you want to drive a three-quarter or one-ton pickup truck, but the work done on the redesigned front end pays back huge dividends. New forged upper control arms and precision-machined cast-iron lowers handle 25-percent more load comfortably and confidently than the previous generation. Getting these bigger and stronger pieces to more quickly and fluidly handle the sharp pothole inputs and rebounds was a surprise. This improved IFS clearly has more control than ever before. We even got the same impression on a 3500 HD dually as well. We don't usually think about refinement when driving vehicles in this segment, but GM engineers pulled a rabbit out of their hat.

Chevrolet Volt Finishes Freedom Drive

The Chevrolet Volt gave a new meaning to freedom over the Independence Day Weekend, completing a trouble-free 1,776 mile Freedom Drive from Austin, TX, to New York City.

“While our engineers are still working on our final calibrations, we could not have asked for the Volt to perform any better than it did," said Tony Posawatz, vehicle line director, global electric vehicles and Chevrolet Volt.

The drive began on July 1, shortly after GM Chairman and CEO Ed Whitacre announced the addition of Texas, New York, Connecticut and New Jersey to markets where the extended range electric vehicle will be sold later this year.

Chevrolet Volt Undergoes Hot Weather Testing

The 2011 Chevrolet Volt is being put through hot weather testing at the GM Desert Proving Grounds in Arizona:

While the Volt is designed to operate in all weather and temperature conditions, one of the tests it is undergoing in the desert is the Hot Soak Evaluation, where temperatures inside the cabin can exceed 175 degrees F.

Engineers “bake” the Volt in the sun for several hours, then open everything in the car, cycle all of the electric accessories and then take the car down the ride handling track to check for squeaks and rattles. Additionally, they check to make sure the door seals continue to close off the cabin to the hot air as they cool the Volt down using its high-efficiency air conditioning system.

“The car performed well,” said senior durability test engineer Steve Pratt. “The air conditioner cooled things off from our interior temperature of 138 degrees down to a nice comfortable temperature for driving.”
