2011 Chevrolet Cruze Earns NHTSA's 5-Star Rating

The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze has earned the NHTSA's 5-Star Overall Safety Rating:

The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze earned five-star crash test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), further building on the vehicle’s safety record in markets around the world.
The Cruze was tested under NHTSA’s revised New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) implemented this fall for the 2011 model year. The rating is based on more rigorous frontal and side crash tests in addition to rollover resistance testing. Under the new system, the three test conditions are combined mathematically into an “Overall Vehicle Score.”
The Cruze is the first vehicle tested under the new rating system to achieve five stars in each of the individual crash impact conditions, leading to an overall vehicle score of five stars – the highest rating possible.

“Cruze has achieved five-star crash safety scores everywhere it is rated in the world. This is the direct result of our global engineering team’s focused effort,” said Jeff Boyer, General Motors’ executive director of vehicle safety. “These safety ratings reflect the confidence we have in Cruze’s state-of-the-art safety technologies and overall crashworthiness.”

The 2011 Chevrolet Silverado HD has been honored with the title of 2011 Motor Trend Truck of the Year:

2011 Chevrolet Volt Gets New Fuel Economy Label

The 2011 Chevrolet Volt's unique drive system means it will display a new style of fuel economy label when it reaches showrooms in the next couple of weeks:

With its ability to operate completely gasoline- and emissions-free for 25 to 50 miles and then continue indefinitely with its range- extending engine, the Volt’s energy efficiency depends on how you use it.

Because the Volt works like no other car before it, General Motors and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency collaborated to design a new label to help consumers understand what to expect when they drive the Volt. Before plug-in cars like the Volt, calculating fuel economy was simply a matter of filling the tank with fuel, driving the vehicle and dividing the distance by the amount of fuel consumed.

2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco Offers Segment-Leading Mileage

The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco will offer a segment-leading 42 MPG on the highway:

The official fuel economy numbers for the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco are in and they’re good. Segment-leading good. It delivers an EPA-estimated 42 mpg on the highway (manual transmission models), with equally impressive city fuel economy of 28 mpg.

Cruze Eco’s highway fuel economy beats non-hybrid segment competitors – including 23 percent greater highway fuel economy than the Honda Civic – as well as the Ford Fiesta subcompact and many hybrid models. In fact, it’s better than Ford Fusion Hybrid, Nissan Altima Hybrid and Toyota Camry Hybrid.

Learn About the Chevrolet Cruze Paint Process

Getting the amazing color palette available for the Chevrolet Cruze has been a five year process:

To understand the engineering behind the Cruze exterior appearance, it’s best to start at the end of the paint shop at Lordstown Assembly. A $160 million renovation of Lordstown’s paint facility was completed in late 2005, making it one of the most-advanced paint facilities in the United States.
The two visual layers of paint include a clearcoat top layer that creates the wet, lustrous shine and mirror finish, and the base coat that provides the color pigment and light-reflecting sparkle. Under the visible surface are a crystalline zinc-based conversion coating, an electrodeposition primer, and a powder-primer coat. The powder prime is electrically charged, which makes it cling to the metal body like a magnet. The powder is then “baked” to create a durable smooth surface for painting. This process is more environmentally friendly than traditional liquid primers because it eliminates the need for liquid solvents, and is up to 95 percent efficient.

Before they reach plants like Lordstown, every color finish is subjected to up to 1,825 days of constant exposure in one of the harshest environments on Earth – South Florida.

Chevrolet Cruze Tops Sound Competition

The Chevrolet Cruze with a factory sound system has come out with top honors for 2 of the 3 evaluations at the MECA Sound Quality League competition:

For the subjective evaluation, judges listened to the same music selections in each car for consistency, and awarded points based on system noise, tonality, realism, staging, and placement. The Cruze took first place, with an average of 74.83 points out of a possible 100, compared to 69.75 for Corolla, and 58.83 for Civic.

“The most important measure of an audio system is how well it recreates the experience of listening to a live performance,” said Stern. “From that perspective, the Cruze was clearly the best of the group, delivering more presence, more realistic sub-bass, and silky smooth midrange.

“In our competitions, stock systems typically score between 55 and 65 points,” Stern said. “With nearly 75 points, the Cruze delivers the performance we would expect in a luxury car – not an $18,000 car.”

2011 Chevrolet Cruze Meets the Quiet Interior Challenge

Chevrolet took the challenge of making a compact car with a quiet interior seriously when they were developing the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze.  The result is a car with the quiet and refinement of a larger vehicle, but the value and efficiency of a compact.

To meet their objectives for the U.S. market, engineers developed more than 30 acoustic treatments that mute unwanted engine, road, and wind noise. Here are 10 of the most significant features:

500 inches of structural adhesive reduce structural noise and increase body strength

Seven pints of liquid sound deadener on the cabin floor mute road and friction noise, and weigh 30 percent less than conventional sound-deadening materials

A five-millimeter, acoustic-laminated windshield quiets wind noise

Triple seals for all four doors block wind and road noise

30 “Snickers bars” of expandable, sound-blocking baffles in the roofline and window frames quiet noise transmitted around the door openings

The 26- x 50-inch hood liner features acoustic materials that mute engine noise

Two sound-absorbing mats on both sides of the front-of-dash panel isolate engine noise, and save three kilograms of weight by using lightweight materials

A 15-millimeter-thick mat in the spare-tire well absorbs road noise

Four wheel-well liners, backed with textile material, block tire noise

A five-layer headliner muffles cabin noise

2011 Chevrolet Cruze Uses Special Oil Pump for Fuel Conservation

The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze uses a special oil pump to attain its impressive fuel conservation:

The oil pump in the engine of the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze takes a laid-back approach to its work, delivering the precise amount of oil needed during all driving conditions. That requires the engine to work less versus a conventional pump and ultimately saves fuel.

A standard feature in the Cruze’s Ecotec 1.4L turbocharged engine, the variable displacement oil pump reduces the displacement during engine warm up and high speed conditions. The volume of oil from the pump varies with rpm by changing the pump’s displacement through a pivoting control chamber mechanism and sliding vanes. A fixed displacement pump would typically bypass the extra oil internally.

“By lowering the volume of oil we reduce the amount of energy, or torque, required to pump the oil, without taking necessary lubrication away from the engine,” said Mike Katerberg, assistant chief engineer for the 1.4L. “Reducing the torque demand reduces fuel consumption. It’s a simple, durable, maintenance-free design that we have used in our transmissions for years and more recently in our hybrid vehicles.”

2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco Offers Fuel Efficiency Without Hybrid Pricetag

The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco will offer hybrid-like fuel economy without the usual hybrid price:

“The Cruze Eco delivers hybrid-like efficiency without the price tag,” said Jim Campbell, U.S. vice president, Chevrolet marketing. “Along with the Volt electric vehicle with extended range, it demonstrates how Chevrolet is working to bring new products to market that range from gas-friendly to gas-free.”

The Eco achieves greater fuel economy using a number of features that enhance its aerodynamics, minimize weight and reduce rolling resistance. Details include:

A lower front grille air shutter that closes at higher speeds to improve aerodynamics and opens at lower speeds to optimize engine-cooling airflow

The upper grille has more “closeouts” to improve aerodynamics

A lower front air dam extension, extensive use of underbody panels and a rear spoiler enhance aerodynamics

A lowered ride height improves aerodynamics

Unique 17-inch lightweight aluminum wheels

Ultra-low rolling resistance 17-inch Goodyear tires.

The axle ratio on the manual-transmission model is also optimized for fuel economy, while helping the car deliver confident performance. Chevrolet estimates the Cruze Eco will deliver 0-60 mph performance of about 10 seconds with the manual transmission and nine seconds with the six-speed automatic.

The Cruze Eco will be available in the fourth quarter of 2010.

MotorTrend Drives the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado HD

MotorTrend recently had the chance to drive the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado HD:

So how does the lineup drive? GM recently gave us the chance to drive just about every variation it offers, through the rolling (and sometimes steep) hills of eastern Maryland, parts of Pennsylvania, and the deep-wooded areas of West Virginia. For simplicity's sake, I'll focus most of my comments on the Silverado 2500 HD Extended Cab LT 4x4. This configuration will likely be the volume leader for GM. From the beginning of our route it was almost startling how smooth the front and rear suspensions drove over the hilly highways, especially since our test truck was completely empty of payload.

Traditionally, empty is never how you want to drive a three-quarter or one-ton pickup truck, but the work done on the redesigned front end pays back huge dividends. New forged upper control arms and precision-machined cast-iron lowers handle 25-percent more load comfortably and confidently than the previous generation. Getting these bigger and stronger pieces to more quickly and fluidly handle the sharp pothole inputs and rebounds was a surprise. This improved IFS clearly has more control than ever before. We even got the same impression on a 3500 HD dually as well. We don't usually think about refinement when driving vehicles in this segment, but GM engineers pulled a rabbit out of their hat.

Chevrolet Volt Undergoes Hot Weather Testing

The 2011 Chevrolet Volt is being put through hot weather testing at the GM Desert Proving Grounds in Arizona:

While the Volt is designed to operate in all weather and temperature conditions, one of the tests it is undergoing in the desert is the Hot Soak Evaluation, where temperatures inside the cabin can exceed 175 degrees F.

Engineers “bake” the Volt in the sun for several hours, then open everything in the car, cycle all of the electric accessories and then take the car down the ride handling track to check for squeaks and rattles. Additionally, they check to make sure the door seals continue to close off the cabin to the hot air as they cool the Volt down using its high-efficiency air conditioning system.

“The car performed well,” said senior durability test engineer Steve Pratt. “The air conditioner cooled things off from our interior temperature of 138 degrees down to a nice comfortable temperature for driving.”

To certify increased payload and towing capacities for the 2011 Silverado HD, engineers conducted a battery of tests.

Based on extensive testing at maximum gross combined weight rating (GCWR) to validate the durability of the powertain, drivetrain, and brake components, the GCWR is increased to 29,200 pounds.

Based on further testing in varied terrain, grades, and climates while pulling the maximum trailer weight to confirm predictable and stable handling, the maximum 5th-wheel towing capacity was increased to 21,700 pounds, and conventional towing capacity increased to 17,000 pounds.

After higher-strength steel for cargo box cross sills was specified, the team conducted additional testing hauling maximum payloads to test the stronger cargo box and rear-axle components. As a result, the maximum payload has been increased to 6,635 pounds.

Based on these improved capacities, the 2011 Silverado HD possesses segment-leading capability in horsepower, torque, conventional towing, 5th-wheel towing, and payload.

Chevrolet Joins "No Phone Zone" Campaign

Chevrolet recently joined Oprah Winfrey in an effort to eliminate distracted driving.  The program is called 'No Phone Zone".

Today, Chevrolet joined the “No Phone Zone” campaign, created by Oprah Winfrey and Harpo Studios, to combat distracted driving. General Motors Chairman and CEO Ed Whitacre, along with UAW employees from GM’s Lansing Delta Township assembly plant, announced Chevrolet’s support of the campaign in a taped segment during “The Oprah Winfrey Show” dedicated to the first national “No Phone Zone” Day.

The campaign is dedicated to honoring the lives lost due to distracted driving, educating the public about the dangers of distracted driving and activating people to make a difference in their communities. As part of the campaign, drivers are encouraged to take the “No Phone Zone” pledge. The pledge, available at www.oprah.com, asks motorists to commit to:

Not text while driving
Not text while driving, and use only hands-free calling
Not text or use the phone while driving, and pull over to a secure location if they need to make a call

In addition to Whitacre’s appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show”, Chevrolet will lead an internal campaign to encourage the more than 77,000 General Motors employees in the U.S. to take the “No Phone Zone” pledge. Chevrolet will also sponsor more than 400 public service announcement (PSA) broadcasts for the “No Phone Zone” campaign. Once the PSA is finalized, it will also be available online at www.youtube.com/chevrolet.

Update on Chevrolet Volt Battery Testing

The battery for the upcoming Chevrolet Volt has undergone some rigorous testing with impressive results:

Recent calibration drives of pre-production Chevrolet Volt electric vehicles have achieved up to 39.9 miles of emission-free, electric-only driving range, chief engineer Andrew Farah said Monday during a program update for news media.

The Volt, which can travel up to 300 miles beyond its pure electric range because of a small on board gasoline engine, recently completed a round of cold weather testing in Kapuskasing, Ontario, Canada, and will undergo additional hot weather testing in Yuma, AZ, in June and July.

The Volt remains on schedule for start of regular production in the fourth quarter. Farah, chief engineer for the Volt and the Opel Ampera, said more than 500,000 test miles have already been put on the pre-production Volt vehicles.

Chevrolet and Youth Baseball: Working Together for Communities

Chevrolet has long been a supporter of youth baseball in communities across the country, and that strong partnership continues this year.  In fact, it has been expanded:

Chevrolet has expanded its support of youth baseball players in communities across the country through the Chevy Youth Baseball program. Since its beginning in Atlanta in 2006, Chevy Youth Baseball has benefitted more than one million youth baseball players and their families.

Participating youth baseball leagues receive equipment and monetary donations, unique Major League Baseball experiences including tickets to games and invitations to exclusive instructional clinics, as well as fundraising opportunities compliments of Chevy and its dealers.

And this year, Chevrolet is partnering with Major League Baseball® , MLB Advanced Media and The Scotts Company (the Official Lawn Care Company of MLB) to refurbish five youth baseball fields in the U.S. through ‘Building Diamonds and Dreams.’ At www.chevybaseball.com fans of their local youth baseball team can enter their ZIP code for a chance to win the field makeover. An ongoing tally of the most active ZIP codes will be shown on the web site. Five winners will be drawn from the ZIP codes submitted. Nominating a ZIP code numerous times could increase the chance of being selected.

Each consumer who nominates a ZIP code on-line gives kids a chance to win a ballpark makeover, and also will be entered for a chance to win their choice of a new Chevy Malibu, Traverse, Equinox or Silverado.

The program will run from MLB Opening Day (April 5) and continue through the MLB All-Star Game®, ending July 16, 2010.

Automobile Magazine First Look at 2011 Chevrolet Cruze

Automobile Magazine recently took a look at the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco and RS:

First, the Cruze Eco. Like LT and LTZ models, the Eco is powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque mated to either a six-speed automatic or a six-speed manual. Though EPA fuel economy figures aren't yet available, Chevy says that the Eco achieves 40 mpg highway when combined with the manual, three mpg better than the five-speed-equipped Cobalt XFE, but the automaker does not yet have a figure for auto-trans models.

Chevrolet managed to boost fuel economy without cutting power thanks to a number of small aerodynamic changes. First, the Cruze Eco is fitted with ultra-low rolling resistance tires on unique 17-inch aluminum wheels. Further, it receives a revised grille, lower front air-dam extension, numerous underbody panels, rear spoiler, and a lower-grille shutter that closes at high speeds that improves engine cooling though optimized airflow.

The RS, meanwhile, is an appearance package for LT and LTZ models. On the outside, it features unique front and rear fascias as well as fog lights. Inside, chrome trim replaces the standard silver finishes on the and the gauge cluster receives ice-blue backlighting.

2011 Chevrolet Silverado HD Offers Flexibility

The 2011 Silverado HD offers a wide variety of terrific features and flexibility:

Chevrolet's new 2011 Silverado 3500HD chassis cab trucks are stronger, sturdier and more secure. They offer a wider range of uses than the models they replace, thanks to a more powerful 6.6L Duramax diesel, as well as increased gross vehicle weight ratings of up to 13,200 pounds (5,987 kg) and a gross combined weight rating of up to 27,500 pounds (12,473 kg) on dual rear wheel models.

“These trucks were designed for a large variety of uses, all based on customer feedback,” said Joyce Mattman, marketing director, GM Fleet and Commercial Operations. “Our engineers met with members of the National Truck Equipment Association during the development process, giving us valuable feedback and input to the truck you're seeing today.”

New for chassis cabs are 2WD and 4WD crew cab configurations. The crew cab replaces the previous extended cab, allowing more people to travel more comfortably – a benefit for work crews traveling to the job site. The new crew cab chassis cab configuration is offered in a 60-inch cab-to-axle (CA), while the regular cab chassis cab models are offered in 60-inch and 84-inch CAs.

Motor Trend First Drive: 2011 Chevrolet Volt

Motor Trend took a first drive of the 2011 Chevrolet Volt.  Here is a bit of the article, but you can read the whole article and see the video here.

The EV2, er, Volt, we had the opportunity to drive today at Dodger Stadium represents a significant step toward the car's eventual production, slated for late 2010 as a 2011 model. And what are the big takeaways from today's limited, parking lot driving experience? One is that its engine/generator's startup experience (which occurs after its EV-mode's battery charge has depleted to about 30 percent) is far more seamless than I ever would have expected. Two is that despite its other-worldly powertrain, the Volt drives remarkably like any normal car (Mom would never know the difference). And three, those Volt skeptics out there are going to be badly embarrassed if they keep doubting the seriousness of this vehicle.
