Help Choose the Next Chevrolet Super Bowl Ad

From Chevrolet.com:

Independent film makers from 32 countries are offering their interpretations of Chevrolet’s “Everyday Hero” for a chance to have their 30-second ad aired during the telecast of Super Bowl XLVI. Now, fans can cash in by sharing with their friends their favorite spot among the top 35 entries featured on ChevroletRoute66.MSN.com.
Chevrolet and MOFILM, a global creative community, received 197 entries from film makers across the globe. The best spot as determined by Chevrolet will be shown during the big game on Feb. 5, 2012.
“With Chevrolet Route 66, we wanted to tap into the talents of creative people from every corner of the Earth to discover our next Super Bowl ad,” said Joel Ewanick, GM vice president and global chief marketing officer. “The submissions we received show that people from around the world share many of the same values and how Chevrolet plays a role in helping them along life’s road.”
Beginning today Dec. 22 and running through 6:59 p.m. EST on Jan. 25, 2012, eligible fans from Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Mexico, the United Kingdom and United States can watch, rate and share their favorite Chevrolet Route 66 film. Those who share their personalized link to the videos most often and give the most creative answer to the question “if you could drive to any destination in your home country, where would you go?” could win up to $10,000.
To engage fans, Chevrolet turned to Microsoft Advertising to create a contest hub to house and share the videos that offers a personalized experience with the ability to localize and share the global films.
“Because Chevrolet is sold in many countries, ‘crowd-sourcing’ content globally is a great way to find creative advertising that resonates with consumers,” said Ewanick. “Using that same concept, we hope to have fans identify their favorite ads for us by voting with their ‘clicks’ and sharing with friends.”
The Microsoft hub will identify registrants with unique user codes that will allow them to accumulate points every time they share with another fan. The top fans as measured by sharing will be tracked by the contest site leader board. To be sure the contest is won by a real person and not a web “bot,” the contest site will ask viewers to  “confirm” by entering a valid email address.
Fans can enter the contest and view complete program details by visiting the contest website. Winners will be announced the within two weeks following the conclusion of the contest.

2013 Chevrolet Sonic RS Offers Increased Performance

From Chevrolet.com:

A hotter Chevrolet Sonic is about to sound off – the 2013 Sonic RS. It goes on sale in late 2012, after making its public debut at the North American International Auto Show Jan. 14-22.
The new RS amplifies the Sonic’s youthful style and driving experience with unique exterior and interior features matched with a 138-horsepower (103 kW) Ecotec 1.4L turbo engine. Sonic is the only vehicle in its segment to offer a turbocharged powertrain.
“The new Chevrolet Sonic RS pushes Chevrolet’s performance heritage in a new direction, for a new generation of drivers,” said Chris Perry, vice president of Global Chevrolet Marketing. “It takes the Sonic’s great design and latest connectivity features and combines them with a more performance-oriented look and feel.”
The Sonic RS is offered exclusively in the five-door body style. Chevrolet’s exclusive MyLink infotainment system is standard. It enables navigation directions downloaded through a smart phone to be shown on the radio’s large display, and offers the personalized connectivity of Pandora and Stitcher Internet radio.
Sonic RS performance
The Sonic RS is powered by a standard Ecotec 1.4L turbo engine that is rated at 138 horsepower (103 kW) and 148 lb.-ft. of torque (200 Nm) – and provides an immediate feeling of power that is sustained across the rpm band, for a greater feeling of performance at lower rpm. It’s matched with a six-speed manual transmission or six-speed automatic.
Unique gear ratios for the six-speed manual transmission and unique final drive ratio for the automatic give the Sonic RS a sportier feel than non-RS models.
Complementing the segment-exclusive turbocharged powertrain is MacPherson strut front suspension with coil springs and stabilizer bar, and a semi-independent, torsion beam axle-mount compound link-type rear suspension – featuring a robust, tubular V-shape beam – with gas-charged shocks. The front and rear tracks are identical at 59.4 inches (1,509 mm), for well-planted stability and balance.
The new RS is the only Sonic model offered with four-wheel disc brakes, which are partnered with a four-channel anti-lock braking system. The four-sensor system – one at each wheel – incorporates electronic brake force distribution, which balances braking performance based on such factors as road conditions and the weight of passengers and/or cargo.
Electric power steering is standard and features a wear compensator that continually adjusts the system interaction with the steering gear to ensure precise steering action over the life of the system.

Chevrolet Cruze Features Innovative Splash Shield

From Chevrolet.com:

When it comes to making sure the Chevrolet Cruze is as durable as it can be, Dave Schoener and his teammates are all wet.

As a General Motors splash test engineer, Schoener helped develop an innovative splash shield for the Chevrolet Cruze that protects the engine compartment from water and potentially harmful contaminants.

In addition, the splash shields, a segment exclusive in the Cruze, help prevent underbody corrosion by repelling water, dirt and mud. They also contribute to the Cruze’s fuel economy – an EPA-estimated 42 mpg highway for Cruze Eco – by reducing wind drag.

“With the Cruze, you have a very comprehensive splash protector on an entry sedan that you typically wouldn’t see except in high-end luxury vehicles,” said Schoener.

A Look Back at Chevrolet Trucks

From Chevrolet.com:

Chevrolet captured the spirit of 20th Century America, with its “work hard, play hard” ethic. And perhaps no Chevrolet represents this spirit better than the Chevy truck.

Founded in Detroit on Nov. 3, 1911, Chevrolet produced only cars through 1917. The company added its first truck models in January 1918, and has built tens of millions since.

“From the beginning, Chevrolet has offered dependable, long-lasting trucks that help people make a living, enjoy life and get things done,” said Chris Perry, vice president, global marketing and strategy for Chevrolet. “These core values are represented today by our successful Silverado, Tahoe and Suburban models, and by our all-new global mid-size trucks, which build on Chevy’s strong truck DNA.”

Chevrolet has built an amazing variety of trucks for individual and commercial customers over the decades. Read the article here to see 10 noteworthy examples through the decades.

Man Reunited With His 1965 Chevrolet Impala

Thanksgiving week is a perfect time to share this feel-good story of a man's reunion with a beloved Chevrolet Impala.  The reunion was documented by Chevrolet;  see the video and full story here.

Herb Younger thought his cherished 1965 Impala SS was out of his life forever when he sold it in the 1980s to pay for his children’s education. Now his car is back with him, an emotional reunion captured on video for all to see.

Chevrolet, keeping with its theme of showcasing authentic moments, created a 60-second TV spot and long-form online version of the real-life homecoming.

Younger bought his Impala new in 1964 and amassed nearly a quarter century of family memories before selling it.

Two decades later, his sons decided to reunite their father with his Impala. After five years of tracking Vehicle Identification Number leads through several states, they finally located their dad’s Impala in Canada and purchased it over the telephone. The car was still in pristine condition.

“It’s not just a car. It’s all the memories and feelings,” said Jared Younger. “It brings all that back.”

Chevrolet Traverse Offers Abundant Storage

From Chevrolet.com:

In a family vehicle like the Chevrolet Traverse crossover, abundant storage can help keep the peace among young rear-seat passengers on long drives. General Motors designers and engineers used the latest 3D virtual reality technology and customer feedback to make it so.

GM Director of Design Quality Matthew Davis says the key lies in understanding where a customer wants certain features to be located. Customers were asked very early in the Traverse’s development about what they carry in their car and where they want to store it. A decade ago, customers wanted places to store CDs and Gameboys. ®, Today, the convenient storage of smartphones, MP3 players and electronic tablets is what matters.

With 116.4 cubic feet of storage, the Traverse offers the most cargo space in its segment along with seating for up to eight.

Customer feedback helped engineers develop an optional family-friendly second-row armrest which unfolds into a tray table while leaving ample storage space for rear-seat passengers.

Recognizing that drivers and passengers riding “shot gun” need a variety of things within arm’s reach, designers created the front center armrest to slide fore and aft, and multiple storage bins can be raised out of the way for unobstructed access to the covered storage bin within the center console.

Chevrolet Sonic Uses Eco-Friendly Paint Process

From Chevrolet.com:

General Motors is the first automaker in the United States to use a unique water-based “three-wet” paint process. Fast becoming a global trend, the process eliminates the need for a primer bake oven, normally used between the primer and color-coating layers. The Orion Assembly Center allows three layers of paint to be applied one after another while still wet before a single trip though the oven.

This process reduces the paint shop footprint by 10 percent, providing additional floor space and reducing the energy needed to heat and cool these areas. This process also upholds the car’s glossy sheen, reflectiveness and durability expected to last years beyond the purchaser’s final car payment.

“Cutting our greenhouse gas emissions and reducing our energy consumption were key to implementing our water-based ‘three-wet’ paint process,” said Mauricio Pincheira, paint manager at Orion. “We want to provide a durable paint that impresses our first-time Sonic customers and maintain the tough environmental standards we have across the company.”

First 2012 Camaro ZL1 Brings $250,000 for Charity

From Chevrolet.com:

The first 2012 Camaro ZL1 offered to the public sold for $250,000 at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Las Vegas on Saturday evening.

The car was offered by Fairway Chevrolet-Buick-GMC in Las Vegas, with 100 percent of the auction proceeds benefitting the YMCA of Southern Nevada.

Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports and chairman of Hendrick Automotive Group, placed the winning bid and is expected to take delivery of his new Camaro in the first quarter of 2012. His will be the only 2012 Camaro ZL1 coupe produced with a Carbon Flash Metallic exterior. It will be the 69th ZL1 produced at the Oshawa Assembly Plant, in tribute of the legendary 1969 Camaro ZL1, of which only 69 were produced.

“Our family has been involved with the YMCA for more than 25 years,” said Greg Heinrich, president of Fairway Chevrolet. “In that time, I have seen firsthand how the ‘Y’ helps young people, families, and seniors in our community. Today, the community’s dependence on the YMCA of Southern Nevada is greater than ever, with the Y sponsoring one out of four members.
Hendrick’s generosity will allow the YMCA of Southern Nevada to open its doors many more people who need a helping hand.

“Like the original, the 2012 Camaro ZL1 introduces a performance benchmark for the street and the track,” said Russ Clark, marketing director for Chevrolet performance cars. “Offering the 69th Camaro ZL1 at auction was a fitting tribute to the 1969 model, and a great way to benefit such a worthy cause as the YMCA.”

The 1969 is the most exclusive and elite Camaro in history. That year, “ZL1” was the code name for the 427-cubic-inch, all-aluminum big-block engine developed for Corvette race cars in the late 1960s, but found its way into 69 Camaros in 1969. The ’69 Camaro recently was voted the “best Chevy of all time” in an online contest.

2013 Chevrolet Malibu to Receive Quieter Engine

From Chevrolet.com:

The 2013 Chevrolet Malibu’s new 2.5L engine with direct injection is expected to be one of the quietest and most refined in the segment. It will be available in the new Malibu next summer.

The 2.5L development team reduced noise intensity by 40-percent of the Ecotec 2.4L engine, which was already a Ward’s 10 Best Engines award winner. It also passed subjective evaluations of what sounds good as the engine climbs through its rpm band. To Malibu’s passengers, that is expected to mean a quieter driving experience and a more refined sound as the engine revs to its 7,000-rpm peak.

The refinement and quietness of the 2.5L are impressive,” said Tom Slopsema, Noise and Vibration engineer. “No fastener, cover or internal engine part was left unexamined in our quest to make this an engine that surpasses the benchmarks in the industry.”

Specifically, the engine’s noise frequency signature was targeted, with the aim of pushing radiated noises into a higher frequency range well above 2,000 hertz, which is more pleasing to the ear – particularly in the high-load operating ranges where engine sound is the most intensive.

“Think of it as the difference between low-frequency, course noise, such as a vacuum cleaner, versus a higher frequency, precision noise, such as a sewing machine,” said Slopsema. “We focused on reducing the overall engine noise level and placing the remaining noise in a higher frequency range.”

Chevrolet Logo History Mystery

From Chevrolet.com:

Globally recognized today, the Chevrolet bowtie logo was introduced by company co-founder William C. Durant in late 1913. But how it came to be synonymous with the brand is open to wide interpretation.
Durant’s version of how the logo came into existence is well known. The long-accepted story, confirmed by Durant himself, was that it was inspired by the wallpaper design in a Parisian hotel.
According to The Chevrolet Story of 1961, an official company publication issued in celebration of Chevrolet's 50th anniversary:
“It originated in Durant's imagination when, as a world traveler in 1908, he saw the pattern marching off into infinity as a design on wallpaper in a French hotel. He tore off a piece of the wallpaper and kept it to show friends, with the thought that it would make a good nameplate for a car.”
However, conflicting accounts have emerged, each of which is plausible enough to deepen the mystery and suggest it may never be solved. Two of the alternate origins come from within the Durant family itself.
In 1929, Durant's daughter, Margery, published a book entitled, My Father. In it, she told how Durant sometimes doodled nameplate designs on pieces of paper at the dinner table. “I think it was between the soup and the fried chicken one night that he sketched out the design that is used on the Chevrolet car to this day,” she wrote.
More than half a century later, another Bowtie origin was recounted in a 1986 issue of Chevrolet Pro Management Magazine based on a 13-year-old interview with Durant's widow, Catherine. She recalled how she and her husband were on holiday in Hot Springs, Va., in 1912. While reading a newspaper in their hotel room, Durant spotted a design and exclaimed, “I think this would be a very good emblem for the Chevrolet.” Unfortunately, at the time, Mrs. Durant didn't clarify what the motif was or how it was used.
That nugget of information inspired Ken Kaufmann, historian and editor of The Chevrolet Review, to search out its validity. In a Nov. 12, 1911 edition of The Constitution newspaper, published in Atlanta, an advertisement appeared from by the Southern Compressed Coal Company for “Coalettes,” a refined fuel product for fires. The Coalettes logo, as published in the ad, had a slanted bowtie form, very similar to the shape that would soon become the Chevrolet icon. Did Durant and his wife see the same ad – or one similar – the following year a few states to the north? The date of the paper was just nine days after the incorporation of the Chevrolet Motor Co.
One other explanation attributes the design to a stylized version of the cross of the Swiss flag. Louis Chevrolet was born in Switzerland at La Chaux-de-Fonds, Canton of Neuchâtel, to French parents, on Christmas Day 1878.
Whichever origin is true, within a few years, the bowtie would emerge as the definitive Chevrolet logo. An October 2, 1913 edition of The Washington Post seems, so far, to be the earliest known example of the symbol being used to advertise the brand. “Look for this nameplate” the ad proclaims above the emblem. Customers the world over have been doing so ever since.
Many variations in coloring and detail of the Chevrolet bowtie have come and gone over the decades since its introduction in late 1913, but the essential shape has never changed. In 2004, Chevrolet began to phase in the gold bowtie that today serves as the brand identity for all of its cars and trucks marketed globally. The move reinforced the strength of what was already one of the most-recognized automotive emblems in the world. More than 4.25 million Chevrolets were sold in more than 120 countries and regions during 2010.

100 Millionth Chevy Small Block to be Built

From Chevrolet.com:

The 100-millionth Chevy Small Block engine will be produced in 2011, commemorating a defining chapter in Chevrolet’s 100-year history. Introduced in 1955, the “Chevy V-8” transformed the brand, and fueled American’s love of performance that continues today.

“The introduction of the Small Block changed everything,” said Jim Campbell, vice president, GM Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. “The Small Block was an instant success because it offered customers high performance and an affordable price, in a compact design that was very easy to modify. The Small Block also started a wave of innovation – and escalating performance – that transformed the cars Americans drove on the street and the track.”

Today, Chevrolet sells more four-cylinder engines than V-8s. But, descendents of the original Chevy small block still power Chevrolet’s most-capable production and racing vehicles. As per the original, the newer V-8s are physically small and light – and extremely efficient at turning fuel into horsepower.

“Without question, the current Chevrolet V-8s are lineal descendants of the 1955 small block,” said Sam Winegarden, GM executive director for Global Engine Engineering. “They retain the 90-degree V-configured eight-cylinder layout, overhead valve placement and characteristic pushrod valve train. Where they differ are the modern technologies that would have sounded like science fiction 50 years ago, such as all-aluminum blocks, titanium connecting rods, Active Fuel Management, and variable valve timing.”

On the track, the Small Block has made Chevrolet the most-winning name in NASCAR history, and it powered the Corvette Racing team to seven class wins at Le Mans between 2001 and 2011.

On the street, the modern Small Block powers Chevrolet’s full-size trucks, such as Silverado and Suburban, as well as performance cars including the Camaro and Corvette. These modern engines deliver levels of power, durability, and efficiency that were inconceivable 50 years ago. For example, the 6.2L Small Block in 2012 Corvette delivers 436 horsepower, up to 26 miles per gallon, and is backed by General Motors’ five-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

Chevrolet Engineers Use Technology to Reduce Cabin Noise

From Chevrolet.com:

A room full of audiophiles may not agree on a single style of music, but most concur that ordinary MP3 player ear buds don’t have the technology to deliver concert-quality sound. Likewise, Chevrolet noise engineers threw out conventional tools to evaluate the interior sound quality of the all-new 2013 Malibu sedan.

In the intensely competitive midsize car segment, customers expect refined, quiet interiors. The challenge for engineers is that sound – like music – is very subjective, and people respond to it differently. “To tune the sound properties to appeal to the widest possible audience, we need to make sure everyone hears the same thing,” said Kara Gordon, Malibu’s lead acoustic engineer.

Gordon and her fellow engineers are using better sound reproduction in the lab to help make the 2013 Malibu sedan one of the most refined and quiet midsize sedans available when it launches early next year.

They are doing this by equipping pre-production Malibus with a mannequin-like recording device called an Aachen HEAD. Named for the headquarters of Head Acoustics GmbH in Aachen, Germany, the head is a digital recording tool that closely matches the way humans process sound with both their ears. The Aachen HEAD technology preserves the binaural attributes of the sound, regardless of whether it’s inside or outside of a moving vehicle.

The device mimics the head of an average-sized person and incorporates specially calibrated, highly accurate digital microphones in each ear position. The microphones use a precise, 24-bit recording resolution to enable dynamic range equal with human hearing.

The Aachen HEAD is typically belted into the passenger seat or rear seat farthest from the driver. The recordings are made as the test Malibus are driven on a variety of road surfaces at a range of speeds.

At General Motors’ “Jury Room” in Milford, Mich., groups of engineers listen to the Malibu’s interior noise recordings and rate them on several criteria.

The Jury Room is equipped with a high-fidelity audio playback system that features Stax SR-303 electrostatic ear speakers. Unlike those little white buds, the large, rectangular Stax units fit over the ear and feature a large, translucent electrostatic film for precise sound reproduction.
The stock ear buds that come with a digital music player can reproduce sounds from a low end of 20 Hz to a maximum of 20,000 Hz, but all audio devices experience distortion as they approach the limits of their range.

In contrast, the Stax ear speakers’ range goes from just 7 Hz all the way up to 41,000 Hz, well beyond the range of the human ear. However, that extra head room means the speakers are always closer to their sweet spot for the sounds we can hear. That means everyone evaluating the sounds of a Malibu or any other Chevrolet hears the same sounds, regardless of which set of ear speakers is used, giving the engineers more consistent feedback on sound quality.

“The typical acoustic memory of the human ear to discern subtle yet important differences is about 10 seconds – or about the time it takes to go from one vehicle to another. The Aachen HEAD, our Jury Room and high-tech headphones make it possible for us to give our Malibu customers the quietest, most pleasing interior sound quality possible,” said Gordon.

The new Malibu will feature components that prevent tire, wind and road noise from entering the cabin. Several components such as noise-reducing outside rear view mirrors, laminated side glass and noise-absorption pads are strategically placed to make the cabin quiet and improve the overall quality inside.

Chevrolet Renews Baseball Sponsorship

From Chevrolet.com:

Chevrolet will be the sole automotive sponsor of Major League Baseball for the next five years, continuing its affiliation with America’s Pastime. The agreement was announced today before the 82nd annual All-Star Game in Phoenix.

The multi-year agreement maintains Chevrolet’s exclusive category rights, and Chevrolet will remain the presenting sponsor of three of baseball’s most prestigious awards, the Roberto Clemente Award – given annually to the MLB player who combines a dedication to giving back to the community with outstanding skills on the baseball field – as well as the Ted Williams All-Star Game Most Valuable Player Award and the World Series Most Valuable Player Award.

"I can remember when 'Baseball, Apple Pie, and Chevrolet' was the jingle for Chevy advertisements in the 1970s," said Kevin Mayer, director of advertising and promotions for Chevrolet, "but Chevrolet and baseball have shared a place in American culture for most of the past 100 years.”

2013 Chevrolet Malibu Uses Oscar for More Comfortable Seating

From Chevrolet.com:

The name “Oscar” may bring to mind a grouch, an award statuette, a former championship boxer or maybe even a hot dog. But for Chevrolet, Oscar plays a key role in the engineering and interior design of the all-new 2013 Malibu.

Oscar is GM’s three-dimensional, mannequin-like simulation tool comfort engineers used early in the product development process of Malibu to determine the overall dimensional layout of the car’s interior. Before the interior was designed and engineered, Oscar first provided the key measurements Engineering and Design needed to create optimal interior space and comfort.

Technically known as a “Comfort Dimensioning System,” Oscar is assembled in 18 removable parts weighing up to 170 lbs., and is made of steel, plastic and aluminum.

In the mid-1940s, Northrop used a similar device named Oscar Eightball. The 185-lb. aviation dummy was used for ejection seat and other testing. GM patented a similar tool for optimal interior space and comfort testing. Later on, the name was shortened to Oscar to differentiate the automotive from the aviation anthropomorphic test dummy.

Oscar is mechanically hinged at the hip or "H" point, which simulates the actual pivot center of the human torso and thigh. Based on the “H Point,” engineers and interior designers determine the necessary headroom and the optimal back angle that should be offered. All this data directly influences positioning of the steering wheel, the pedals, rearview mirrors, instrument panel and other driving controls to ensure that the Malibu provides maximum room and comfort for a broad spectrum of customers.

When it comes to leg length measurement, Oscar can be assembled to represent an average (172-pound) adult male (50th percentile), scaled up to a 95th percentile male (270 pounds), or reduced to a 5th percentile (108-pound) female. A 95th percentile adult, for example, is larger than 95 percent of the population, while a 5th percentile adult is smaller than 95 percent of the population.

“Oscar represents our consumers,” said Malibu seat performance engineer Daniel Cohen. “We use Oscar much like a builder uses a level to make sure that the building foundation is even. Oscar gives us a solid baseline around which we design and build new vehicles, like the Malibu.”

Chevrolet Cruze Technology Offers Fuel Savings While Slowing

From Chevrolet.com:

Chevrolet Cruze customers can rest easy knowing the engineers who developed their car packed a wide variety of advanced fuel-saving technologies under the hood.
One of those technologies is deceleration fuel cutoff (DFCO). While the vehicle is decelerating or slowing down, fuel is automatically shut off to the Cruze’s advanced Ecotec engine. When the driver accelerates, the fuel automatically begins flowing again and the vehicle accelerates as the driver commands. It’s a seamless process that the driver and passengers don’t notice.

The benefits: This technology increases fuel economy in the Cruze by up to 2 percent, depending on specific driving conditions and behavior. That means on a single tank of fuel, this technology contributes more than 17 miles of the overall range on the Cruze Eco model and more than 11 miles of range on the non-Eco Cruze models. It is an effective technology that helps keep money in a customer’s pocket when at the pump.

“The Cruze is packed with fuel-saving technologies,” said Kai Loos, the development systems manager for the Cruze’s 1.4-liter turbocharged engine. “These types of cost-effective technologies allow Chevrolet to offer customers a vehicle that achieves hybrid-like efficiency without the cost of the hybrid technology.”

How it works: DFCO is enabled when the driver’s foot is off the accelerator pedal and the vehicle is coasting. Through integration of engine and transmission controls, the engine speed is carefully controlled under these deceleration conditions. Fuel automatically begins flowing back to the engine when the driver accelerates or when the engine speed approaches idle conditions.

This technology is on Cruze models with both automatic and manual transmissions.

Chevrolet Camaro Returns in Transformers

From Chevrolet.com:

The Chevrolet Camaro returns as the Autobot “Bumblebee” in Transformers: Dark of the Moon, which opens exclusively in 3D Tuesday and worldwide Wednesday. To celebrate, Chevrolet will offer a 2012 Transformers Special Edition Camaro Coupe to Bumblebee fans in the United States, Canada, China, Japan, Europe, South America, and the Middle East.

“The Transformers franchise has helped introduce Camaro – and Chevrolet – to a whole new generation of fans,” said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. “Its role in the films helped make the Camaro the best-selling sports car in America, and one of the best-known cars of any kind around the world.”

The fifth-generation Camaro previously played Bumblebee in the 2007 film Transformers and in the 2009 film Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. The films generated $1.5 billion in global box-office sales, and helped reintroduce the Camaro to consumers after a seven-year hiatus from dealerships.

That momentum is expected to accelerate early next year with the introduction of the 550-hp (405 kW) 2012 Camaro ZL1, as well as limited-edition models such as the Transformers Special Edition.

The 2012 Transformers Special Edition will be offered as a $3,000 package on 2LT and 2SS Camaro Coupes with Rally Yellow paint. In addition to the content offered in the popular RS appearance package, the Transformers edition will feature black rally stripes that stretch over the hood, roof, decklid and unique high-wing rear spoiler; 20-inch, black-painted wheels wrapped in high-performance summer tires; and Autobot Shield logos on the center caps and front quarter panels.

Inside, the Transformers Camaro has a black leather interior accented with yellow stitching on the instrument panel, center console, armrests and seats. Autobot Shield logos are embroidered on the front headrests, as well as the center console lid.

Two dealer-installed options are also available: exclusive, 21-inch, black-painted wheels and a black ground-effects package.

Customers may begin ordering the 2012 Transformers Special Edition Camaro in July, with vehicles arriving at dealers in the U.S. and Canada in September.

2012 Chevrolet Cruze Features Improved Fuel Economy

From Chevrolet.com:

For 2012, Chevrolet Cruze models with the 1.4L turbo and six-speed automatic transmission will get 2 mpg better fuel economy. The Cruze Eco with an automatic transmission will deliver as much as 39 mpg on the highway compared with 37 mpg for the current model, Chevrolet said Wednesday.

The most popular 1.4L turbo/six-speed automatic will get 38 mpg compared with 36 mpg for the current model. A lower axle ratio for the 2012 models enables the approximately 5 percent increase in highway fuel efficiency for Cruze.

Cruze Eco with the standard six-speed manual transmission remains the most fuel-efficient gas-powered/non-hybrid vehicle in America, with an EPA-rated 42 mpg on the highway.

Also for 2012, a feature package containing Bluetooth phone connectivity, USB port, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, cruise control, leather-wrapped steering wheel and a leather-wrapped shift knob will be standard on 1LT and Eco models. These features were part of the $525 Connectivity Plus Cruise option package on 2011 models. The option was ordered by 90 percent of American customers.

“Chevrolet is committed to responding to what customers want and making it easier for them,” said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. “Adding these previously optional features streamlines the ordering process and answers the call of what our customers told us should be standard.”

2011 Chevrolet Volt Earns 5-Star Safety Rating

From Chevrolet.com:

The 2011 Chevrolet Volt is the first electric vehicle to earn a five-star overall vehicle score for safety as part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s New Car Assessment Program.

“Safety is a key consideration for all buyers no matter how a car is powered – gas, or in the case of the Volt, electricity,” said Doug Parks, Volt global vehicle line executive.

The Volt also has been named a 2011 Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

For the first 35 miles, the Volt can drive gas- and tailpipe emissions-free using a full charge of electricity stored in its 16-kWh lithium-ion battery. When the Volt’s battery runs low, a gas-powered engine/generator seamlessly operates to extend the driving range another 344 miles on a full tank for a total driving range of 379 miles.

Safety features on the Volt include:

■GM’s StabiliTrak electronic stability control system

■Front-, side- , knee- air bags as well as roof-mounted head-curtain air bags that help protect occupants in a side or rollover crash

■Optional rearview camera system featuring a display integrated into the navigation system screen

■Five-year subscription to OnStar’s Directions and Connections Plan including Automatic Crash Response, stolen vehicle assistance and connected navigation

Starting with 2011 models, NHTSA introduced tougher tests and more rigorous requirements for its five-star safety ratings program that provide more comprehensive information about safety performance and crash-avoidance technologies. Changes include a new side pole test simulating a 20-mph side-impact crash into a 10-inch-diameter pole or tree at a 75-degree angle just behind the A-pillar on the driver’s side.

Chevrolet Volt Owners Recharging With Sunshine

From Chevrolet.com:

Mark Hildebrandt developed an interest in clean energy in the 1970s. Over the years, it became his vocation – he owns a company that installs solar panels – so it’s only natural that he counts on the sun to create the electricity to charge his Chevrolet Volt.

"I made the switch to renewable energy a while ago, and thus with solar energy, I can power my house, charge my Volt and pump energy back into the grid, which I get credit for," said Hildebrandt, owner of Sunventrix in Saline, Mich., and one of the first Volt purchasers in the state.

"As more Volts are sold, I believe the demand for solar charging stations will increase," he said. "I have spoken to a handful of Volt owners in Michigan that are really interested in charging their Volts from solar energy."

Hildebrandt isn’t alone in harnessing the sun for battery power. ZD Wines' winemaster and CEO, Robert deLeuze, has run his Napa, Calif.-based winery exclusively on solar power since 2007, and today you can often find deLeuza’s Volt among the grape vines charging from the winery’s photovoltaic system.

“Solar power generation makes sense, and I think the Volt will help generate more interest in home installations” said deLeuze. “ZD Wines has had a solar power station for the past three years and purchasing my Volt was a driving factor in installing a solar photovoltaic system at my house.”

According to OnStar data, many Volts are going up to 1,000 miles between gasoline fill-ups.

“The majority of miles driven by Volt customers are powered electrically by the Volt’s battery,” said Cristi Landy, Volt marketing director.

The Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant, home of the Volt, is already using sunlight to charge Volts before they are loaded for transport to dealerships. The plant has a 20kW Solar Carport that houses 10 Volt charging stations. Additional charging stations are planned for other locations around the plant.

The Volt’s extended-range capability offers a total driving range of up to 379 miles, based on EPA estimates. For the first 35 miles, the Volt can drive gas- and tailpipe emissions-free using a full charge of electricity stored in its 16-kWh lithium-ion battery. When the Volt’s battery runs low, a gas-powered engine/generator seamlessly operates to extend the driving range another 344 miles on a full tank.

Chevy Cruze Offers Flat Tire Alternative

From Chevrolet.com:

Changing a flat tire on the side of a busy freeway can be a dirty and dangerous job. The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze offers a safer option: an on-board tire inflator kit that also helps improve fuel efficiency by shedding 26 pounds of spare tire and jacking hardware.

The inflator kit is among 42 changes to the Cruze Eco that help it to an EPA-estimated 42 mpg on the highway, the best highway mileage of any non-hybrid, gasoline-fueled, compact available in the U.S. market.

“Getting rid of something as important as the spare tire wasn’t a decision we made lightly,” said Terry Connolly, GM director of Tire and Wheel Systems. “The universal implementation of tire pressure monitoring systems over the past five years has significantly reduced the likelihood that a flat tire will leave you stranded by the side of the road.”

A Tire Pressure Monitoring System provides a warning on the instrument cluster allowing a driver to act before tire damage occurs. The trunk-mounted inflator can be plugged into the 12-volt accessory socket inside the car and be used to re-pressurize the tire with no additional equipment. If the tire has been punctured by a screw, nail or other object, the inflator can inject a sealant capable of plugging holes of up one-quarter-inch in diameter in the tread area.

The process takes just minutes with much less risk than a tire change. Reinflated tires should always be inspected at a repair facility as soon as possible after the car gets get back on the road.

If a tire is too severely damaged to be repaired with the inflator kit, drivers can press the blue OnStar button on the rearview mirror to request emergency roadside assistance. Cruze and all new Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac models are equipped with the embedded OnStar telematics system that can provide roadside assistance, automatic crash response, turn-by-turn directions and other safety and security features.

2012 Chevy Camaro to Offer More Power, Better Fuel Economy

From chevrolet.com:

In auto production, more power, better fuel economy and fewer emissions rarely appear together. But the 2012 Camaro 3.6L direct injection V6 engine achieves all three by combining the exhaust manifold with the cylinder head into a single aluminum casting.

Each integrated exhaust manifold cylinder head – a V6 has two -- replaces a cast iron exhaust manifold, six bolts, a gasket and a heat shield and three bolts. By eliminating this joint, the potential for a gasket failure is eliminated. And the change reduces engine weight by 13 lbs. or 6 kg per engine. Reducing mass helps improve fuel economy and the 2012 Camaro 2LS model is EPA estimated at 30 mpg highway.

“Reducing engine mass of this magnitude doesn’t happen often,” said Ameer Haider, GM assistant chief engineer for V6 engines. “Engineering usually looks for reduction in terms of grams not pounds. It’s just like removing a set of golf clubs from your car when you don’t need them – ultimately it saves fuel. When combined with other mass reductions, the customer will see better fuel economy over time with better performance.”

Extensive simulation and bench testing was performed to perfect cylinder-head airflow. Intake airflow is improved 7 percent with the use of larger intake valves (38.3 mm v. 36.9 mm), which are primarily responsible for an increase of 11 horsepower. Exhaust flow is 10 percent better than the previous V6.

Advanced Tires Increase Fuel Efficiency for Chevrolet Cruze Eco

Chevrolet's engineers helped boost the Cruze Eco's fuel efficiency with the development of advanced tires:

GM tire development engineer Chuck Lantz and his team worked with tire manufacturers to produce an industry benchmark tire that boosts fuel efficiency by three miles per gallon on the Chevy Cruze Eco. That’s about 38 extra miles on a tank of fuel and a savings of about $112 per year for the average driver.

“This tire is way beyond anything in its category,” said Lantz. The Cruze Eco tires make use of special polymers built into the tread compound to reduce rolling resistance, which means less energy is required to keep the tire moving.

So what makes the tire unique? Typically, improving one facet of tire performance like rolling resistance requires sacrifices in other areas like traction in snow and stopping distance. Not so with the leading-edge Cruze Eco tires.

“Thanks to the high-tech polymers we used, we were able to create a high-MPG set of tires without making tradeoffs in other important areas like tire-braking traction and all-weather handling,” said Lantz. “As far as the ride goes, these tires are as smooth as any tire on the road today.”

The tires represent one of many fuel-saving technologies that help the Cruze Eco average 42 miles per gallon on the highway. With a starting suggested price of $19,175, Cruze Eco offers hybrid-like fuel economy without the premium price tag. Other innovations that make the Cruze an MPG standout include an air shutter system that morphs the aerodynamic profile of the vehicle to optimize fuel efficiency and energy-efficient rack-mounted electric power steering.

Chevrolet Trucks to Assist With Tornado Recovery

From chevrolet.com:

Chevrolet is donating a dozen Silverado full-size crew cab pickups to United Ways in Alabama to help with recovery and reconstruction work following a series of deadly tornadoes that struck the region April 27.

The 12 donated pickup trucks, along with a GMC Savana full-size van, were due to arrive today at Tuscaloosa Chevrolet. From there they will be distributed to United Ways in western and central Alabama for use in local relief efforts.

The donations of the trucks came as people from throughout GM reached out to those hit hard by last week’s storms. GM volunteers from the southeast region are gathering in communities where the need is critical to acquire and distribute relief supplies such as tarps, flashlights and batteries.

Also today, the General Motors Foundation announced that it is providing a $100,000 grant to the American Red Cross to help disaster relief efforts in the southeastern states. GM is also encouraging employees to personally support these efforts through a donation link on GM’s internal website.

GM’s OnStar is providing Crisis Assist Services for subscribers in affected states, which provides free hands-free calling minutes and directions. OnStar’s Directions and Connections service is being provided for six months along with 1,000 hands-free calling minutes for each of the donated trucks.

The total Chevrolet, GM Foundation, and OnStar contribution is estimated to exceed $500,000.

Chevrolet Volt Owners Stretching Number of Gas-Free Days

From chevrolet.com:

Chevrolet Volt owners made fewer trips to the gas station in March, going an average of 30 days – or nearly a month – between fill-ups. In fact, some Volt owners say they are challenging themselves to see how fuel-efficient they can be by tracking how far and how long they can go without buying gasoline.

“Volt owners drove an average of 800 miles between fill-ups since the Volt launched in December, and in March they averaged 1,000 miles,” said Cristi Landy, Volt marketing director. “When the majority of miles driven are electrically, gas usage decreases significantly.”

“I am surprised how infrequently I go to the gas station. It’s become a game to achieve as many miles as I can in EV mode,” said Steve Wojtanek, a Volt buyer in Boca Raton, Fla. “I have made it my goal to drive as efficiently as possible and I am seeing the results, with more than 3,417 miles under my belt – of which 2,225 are EV miles.” A Volt owner since December, Wojtanek is averaging 122 miles per gallon and visiting the gas station about once a month.

“On April 11, I had to buy gas for the first time since filling up on Jan. 9,” said Volt owner Gary Davis of Greenville, S.C. “In my Volt I’ve driven 4,600 miles on 8.4 gallons of gas. That’s an impressive 547 mpg that I am achieving with my Volt.”

“Today in the U.S., 80 percent of drivers commute fewer than 40 miles a day, making the Chevy Volt a great daily driver,” said Landy. “We’re hearing from customers like Steve Wojtanek and Gary Davis, who are seeing great daily results.”

Chevy Volt Drivers Tell Their Fuel Economy Stories

Three Chevy Volt owners shared their fuel economy stories on the Chevrolet website:

Three Volts. Three distinct fuel economy stories. Unlike most cars, where mileage differences vary slightly from driver to driver, the Volt defies conventional MPG measures because it runs approximately 35 miles on a single charge of electricity to its 16 kWh battery, and then can travel another 344 miles on an onboard gasoline-powered electric generator that seamlessly kicks in when the battery is drained.

By recharging their Volt regularly, owners are easily surpassing the 93 miles per gallon equivalence, or MPGe, on full electric operation and an overall 60 MPGe composite fuel economy during extended-range operation. The EPA ratings make the Volt the most energy efficient compact car on the market today.

“I really believe that over the long-term we have to have technology that is going to get us off fossil fuels and the Volt does that – I have the option of never buying gas again,” McCarver said.

Said Volt marketing director Cristi Landy: “The Volt is great for any lifestyle and can handle the driving demands of daily life. The majority of Volt customers are finding that by recharging their cars daily they are seeing exceptional real-world fuel economy. ”

What is So Special About the Chevy Volt Gas Tank?

The Chevy Volt offers a special pressure-sealed gas tank:

For the last several decades, new vehicles have been equipped with charcoal canisters to trap evaporating gasoline and then feed it back to the engine. Since the Volt’s engine may not fire up for extended periods, hydrocarbons potentially could build up in the canister, so the sealed tank contains the vapor. The extra pressure meant that a lightweight steel tank had to replace the lightweight plastic tanks used in most modern vehicles.

Volt engineers and supplier Spectra Premium Inc. developed the tank from 1.4 millimeter thick hot-dip tin-zinc coated steel to resist corrosion from both inside and outside. Despite the strength of the tank, it has a mechanical pressure relief valve that begins opening at 3.5 psi and a vacuum relief that opens at -2.3 psi, levels that are rarely exceeded.

Even with a tank that resists fuel vapors escaping or humidity getting in, the gas inside still needs to be used up and replenished periodically. That’s where the Volt’s “maintenance mode” comes in. If the engine hasn’t started after six weeks, the powertrain controller sends a message to the driver telling him the engine needs to run for maintenance.

Volt drivers can defer the engine maintenance mode for up to 24 hours, after which the engine will run for a while on its own to use up some of the gas and keep the internals lubricated and ready for use. If a driver manages to go a full year between fill-ups, the fuel maintenance mode will run the engine until the old gas is used up or the driver adds fresh fuel.

More Info About the Chevrolet Volt Battery

Engineers of the four-seat Chevrolet Volt electric car often refer to its 435-pound battery pack as the fifth passenger. Given the care taken to keep the pack at just the right temperature in all temperature conditions, there is a lot of truth to that.
The Volt’s ability to operate gasoline-free on a day-to-day basis and carry an eight-year/100,000-mile battery warranty is due to active thermal management of the advanced lithium ion battery pack.
“Every battery has a temperature sweet spot where it provides the optimal blend of power output, energy capacity and long life and we keep the Volt right on that target,” said Bill Wallace, General Motors director of Global Battery Systems. Batteries that are too cold are reluctant to release electrons while batteries that run too hot can see a significantly shorter life.
The Volt’s T-shaped battery pack consists of 288 individual cells arranged into nine modules. Plastic frames hold pairs of lithium-ion cells that sandwich an aluminum cooling fin. The design and construction of that aluminum plate is critical to ensuring an even temperature distribution with no hot or cool spots across the flat, rectangular cell. The battery pack has its own cooling circuit that is similar to, but independent from, the engine cooling system.
